BART plans from 1957

Pretty interesting..and ambitious…and disappointing we’re still not there. But we are close if you take into account all the separate rail agencies: BART, Caltrain, VTA, Amtrak and soon SMART (Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit). SMART, which is scheduled for opening 2013 will link Cloverdale in the north to Larkspur on the bay which in turn connects Santa Rosa to San Francisco (albeit through an unfortunate ferry connection).

And as a bonus, rendering of what the Golden Gate Bridge would’ve looked like with BART

Here in Lisbon we have a bridge designed by the same company which designed the Golden Bridge (http://constancalucas.blog.uol.com.br/images/tejofertagus.jpg) and in 1999 the trains started to use it (http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4056/4546372995_ec48bb6fa5.jpg), after some adaptation works. The bridge had been inaugurated in 1966.

I was mistaken. The builder of our bridge was American Bridge Company, who also built San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge, and not Golden Gate. The initial project was already prepared to handle with trains, and a tunnel was built. This tunnel is used from 1999 on.
